Best At Taking Credit Away From Others

Yet again there is another instance of claiming credit for Workers' Party. This time it's the Pioneer Generation Package. Apparently pioneers are enjoying this package because Sylvia Lim mentioned taking care of pioneers in a statement. Mind you, it's not even a speech in parliament but a media release of WP's National Day statement in 2011.

The work of an opposition MP must be really easy if all it takes is a speech or a statement to take the credit away from the many who have spent hours working out the details on how to best take care of our pioneers.

Before Sylvia Lim there were others who have spoken on the topic. They include Loh Meng See in 2001 and Steve Chia in 2005. So who shall we give the credit now?

If words have weight, then the weight of the words must come from the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew and ESM Goh Chok Tong. When they stepped down right after GE 2011, their joint-reminder to the young PAP team:

".....always have in mind the interests of the older generation. This generation who has contributed to Singapore must be well-looked after."

Here is their statement in full:

We have studied the new political situation and thought how it can affect the future. We have made our contributions to the development of Singapore. The time has come for a younger generation to carry Singapore forward in a more difficult and complex situation. The Prime Minister and his team of younger leaders should have a fresh clean slate. A younger generation, besides having a non-corrupt and meritocratic government and a high standard of living, wants to be more engaged in the decisions which affect them. After a watershed general election, we have decided to leave the cabinet and have a completely younger team of ministers to connect to and engage with this young generation in shaping the future of our Singapore.

But the younger team must always have in mind the interests of the older generation. This generation who has contributed to Singapore must be well-looked after.
